02 - Divide marshmallows and butter into three equal portions: approximately 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each color layer.
03 - In a large saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Add red gel food coloring and stir until desired shade is achieved. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until evenly coated. Press mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
04 - Wipe the saucepan clean and melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3 1/3 cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until coated. Gently press mixture over the red layer.
05 - Wipe the saucepan clean and melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Add blue gel food coloring and stir until desired shade is achieved. Add remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies cereal and mix until coated. Gently press mixture over the white layer.
06 - If desired, sprinkle the top with red, white, and blue sprinkles while the mixture is still slightly warm.
07 - Allow treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour. Lift from the pan using the parchment paper, slice into squares, and serve.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • They look Instagram-worthy impressive but are shockingly easy to pull off, even if you're not confident in the kitchen.
  • The whole thing comes together in about 30 minutes of active work, plus cooling time, so you can actually enjoy your day instead of being stuck in the kitchen.
  • Kids go absolutely wild for the color layers, making them perfect for celebrations or just sneaking a square when nobody's looking.
02 -
  • Gel food coloring is absolutely essential here—I learned this the messy way when I tried to save money with liquid coloring and ended up with treats that were soggy and refused to set properly.
  • Wiping your pan between layers genuinely matters because even a thin film of red residue will muddy your white layer and throw off your color effect.
03 -
  • Lightly grease your hands or use a silicone spatula when pressing each layer—this prevents sticking and gives you way more control than trying to use your bare hands.
  • If you're a salty-sweet person, consider using salted butter instead of unsalted, or add a tiny pinch of sea salt to the white layer for an unexpected flavor dimension.
